High quality single crystal growth of a novel superconductor UTe$$_2$$; Improvement of $$T_{rm c}$$ and multiple superconducting phase diagram

We have succeeded to grow high-quality UTe$$_2$$ single crystals with excess uranium through molten salt flux method. We have also studied the superconducting phase diagram using the high-quality crystal applying the fields up to 25 T along the magnetic hard $$b$$ axis.

$$f$$-electron states of NpPd$$_5$$Al$$_2$$ and the isostructural family; Heavy fermion superconductivity accompanied by valence crossover

Electron states are the main theme of "solid-state physics", which is essential for microscopic understanding of multipoles and superconductivity, etc. Rare earths (4$$f$$) and actinides (5$$f$$) provide variety of interesting states realized with competing interactions between the increasing number of $$f$$ electrons. Since crystal field splitting of many-body $$f$$ electron system is smaller than the bandwidth, (1) high resolution experiments are needed, (2) essentially no clear spectrum with well defined peaks is expected in itinerant Ce and U compounds, and (3) Np and Pu is strictly regulated. Therefore, systematic research on magnetic excitations by neutron scattering experiments of localized compounds and rare earth iso-structural reference is useful. We describe the $$f$$ electron states of heavy electron compounds NpPd$$ _5$$Al$$_2$$ and actinide and rare earth based iso-structural family.

The mutual interaction between spin current and magnetization is a key phenomenon in spintronics. This interaction leads to a spinmotive force, a mechanism of energy-transfer from magnetization into conduction electrons. In this review, the basic concepts and recent developments of the spinmotive force are introduced.

Ceramic anvil high pressure cell (mCAC) for magnetic measurements

A miniature opposed-anvil high-pressure cell has been developed for magnetic measurement in a commercial superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer. The maximum pressure $$P_{rm max}$$ depends on the culet size of the anvil: the values of $$P_{rm max}$$ are 2.4 and 7.6 GPa for 1.8 and 0.6 mm culet anvils, respectively. We revealed that the composite ceramic anvil has potential to generate high pressure above 5 GPa. The background magnetization of the Cu-Be gasket is generally two orders of magnitude smaller than the Ni-Cr-Al gasket for the indenter cell. The present cell can be used not only with ferromagnetic and superconducting materials with large magnetization but also with antiferromagnetic compounds with smaller magnetization.

New numerical approach for studying diluted magnetic semiconductors

We report a new combined numerical approach for studying diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS). In this approach, realistic parameters obtained by the ${it ab initio}$ calculation are used for performing quantum Monte Carlo calculations. We show that the proposed approach well describes the magnetic properties of DMS and can be used for designing the new DMS materials which has high Curie temperatures.

Evaluation of pressure-transmitting media for cryogenic experiments

We have evaluated the fourteen kinds of pressure-transmitting media fro cryogenic experiments with the diamond anvil cell. The non-hydrostaticity of the pressure was evaluated from the value of the width of the ruby $$R_1$$ line at 10 GPa and 77 K. The media were classified into three groups from the value. It was found that the argon, nitrogen and helium provide the good hydrostatic pressure even in the low temperature region.

Inelastic neutron scattering measurement using multiple incident energies can drastically enhances the measurement efficiency. The article reviews the principle of this new technique and an example of the measurement using the chopper spectrometer 4SEASONS of the pulsed neutron experimental facility in Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC).

Superconductivity in CeIrSi$$_3$$ realized at the quantum critical point

The magnetic transition temperature of an antiferromagnet CeIrSi$$_3$$ decreases with increasing hydrostatic pressure, and finally superconductivity appears. An exotic superconducting symmetry is expected because of the absence of the inversion center in the crystal structure. One of the prominent features is the anomalously large upper critical field observed around the quantum critical point.
